SAWA:
Theobroma
Award-winning project of a Gaudeamus prize
A project aimed at raising awareness about climate change through an innovative variable typeface.
The SAWA: Theobroma project was born with the aim of raising awareness about climate change, using typography as a tool for advocacy. Through this variable typeface that melts like chocolate, I seek to make visible the consequences of human actions, with a special focus on the disappearance of everyday foods such as cocoa. Furthermore, the proposal includes a strong commitment to sustainability, utilizing recycled and eco-friendly materials to minimize environmental impact.
The design of the typeface was a meticulous process that combined advanced typographic design techniques with a focus on sustainability. This typeface is not only functional and accessible but also incorporates OpenType features, a technical aspect that distinguishes this work in the academic context. The idea of representing the disappearance of a widely popular food like chocolate creates an emotional connection with the audience, encouraging reflection on their responsibility in preserving the environment.
SAWA: Theobroma provided me with the opportunity to develop a project that merges typographic design with an environmental cause. I dedicated myself to using typography as a means of advocacy, a perspective that is not common in my field, and to addressing sustainability issues in an innovative way, especially considering it was a final degree project. This project not only allowed me to enhance my technical skills but also reinforced my commitment to responsible and sustainable design, with the intention of continuing to explore other endangered foods through typography.
